Fire alarm testing | April 6 | HRIC and TRW

Fire alarm testing has been scheduled for the Health Research Innovation Centre and the Training, Research and Wellness buildings. Testing will take place on Thursday, April 6, 2017, between 7 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.

Building occupants will hear several audible messages beginning with "we are testing," and followed by announcements like "shots fired," "person with weapon," and "chemical release," but do not have to leave the building during testing. In the event of a real emergency, announcements will be made. "Test complete" announcements will be made when testing is completed.

UPDATE February 6 | HSC Washroom Upgrade | September 2016 to February 2017

Project update - February 6, 2017
Work on two ground floor washrooms (G130W and G132W) and two first floor washrooms (1020W and 1022W) is currently underway. Project completion is still slated for late February 2017.

Project overview
Starting early September, existing washrooms in the University of Calgary Medical Clinic area of the Health Sciences Centre, ground and first floor, will be upgraded to meet barrier free access requirements.

The project will be completed in two phases, and a large part of the construction work will be done at night, to avoid disruption to patients in the clinic areas and to lab facilities. Work areas will be sealed and hoarded throughout. Alternative washrooms will be identified in re-routing signage.

Project completion is slated for late January and will result in the renovation and refit of 10 washrooms into eight with a net gain in fixtures.

As part of the renovations, the first floor hospital link corridor will be reconfigured and will ultimately provide improved access for wheelchairs and stretchers.

Foothills Medical Centre Parking Closure | September 2016

Foothills Medical Centre parking closure: Increased public/patient traffic through the Health Sciences Centre

Lot 1 at the Foothills Hospital will close for construction September 26, 2016 for approximately three years.

With the closure of Lot 1, patient/public parking will be reassigned on the Foothills Medical Centre site. The majority will be reallocated to Lots 10, 8A and 3. A smaller number will be placed in Lot 6, which already has about 500 stalls allocated for public parking.

Patients and members of the public needing to access the hospital through the Health Sciences Centre will be routed through both the ground and first floor of the University of Calgary Medical Clinic hallway on the north side of the building.

Routing signage will be posted and volunteers will be present to help with wayfinding.

Important notice for UCalgary parking permit holders, Lot 6

UPDATE August 18 | HSC Elevator Upgrade | Feb 2016 to July 2017

Over the next year all of the elevators in the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) will be modernized.

Elevators in the HSC were installed when the building was constructed in the late 1970’s. No significant upgrade has been made to the equipment since installation. The new equipment will be fully compliant with elevator barrier-free recommendations and will be more reliable.

Throughout the project, thousands of pounds of equipment will be removed and replaced on each elevator. It will take approximately three months per elevator to replace the original equipment including control equipment (responsible for speed, leveling at each floor etc.), hoist machinery and interior finishes.

Most of the work will happen in machine rooms at the roof level or in the basement; noise will be primarily confined to those areas. Noise meters will monitor noise levels in sensitive areas, and disruptive work will be scheduled around examinations and events. Project Schedule | More
