Working towards health for all

The Global Health and International Partnerships group of the Cumming School of Medicine is leading the way for many Canadian institutions in a comprehensive and holistic approach to health that is Global and Local.  

Global Health Education

  • Provide leadership, funding and support for international experiences for students in the Cumming School  of Medicine.
  • Administer funds from the Medical Trainee Fund for Cumming School of Medicine trainees in global health.
  • Facilitate supervision for graduate students from low and middle-income countries who wish to pursue a degree in Calgary.
  • Ensure appropriate and comprehensive preparation for students going overseas.
  • Coordinate with Risk Management & Insurance and VP International to ensure safety of students.

Capacity Building

  • Provide guidance on development of new collaboration for capacity building projects in low and middle-income countries.
  • Strengthen research capacity in low and middle-income countries through the development of new research opportunities.
  • Provide limited funding for projects through specific calls for applications.
  • Act as a central link to main campus regarding collaboration (Legal Services, VP International)

Research

  • Support scholarship for global health research and evaluation.

Partnerships

  • Coordinate with VP International and Legal Services to facilitate student and faculty exchanges.
  • Provide leadership on development of new partnerships initiatives with industry and non-profit sectors.
  • Work with faculty to provide support for pre-planned protocol visits from scholars at partner institutions.

Policies/Networks

  • Establish relationships with Faculties of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Social Work at the University of Calgary to foster multi-disciplinary global health research, education and programming. 
  • Advocate for policies on professional development and recognition of global health activities within the Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services.
  • Participate/collaborate with Provincial and National global health steering committees, advisory boards and donor agencies to ensure that the Cumming School of Medicine is fully informed on Canadian policies for global health research investment.

Communication and Fundraising

  • Act as a hub of information for global health education, research and capacity building for the Cumming School of Medicine.
  • Raise awareness of the importance of global health.
  • Liaise with the Office of Fund Development to raise funds for global health activities.
