Family Medicine / Rural Medicine Interest Group

We want to increase medical students' exposure to Family and Rural Medicine and promote post-graduate training and practice in Family and Rural Medicine.

Benefits of Membership

Shadowing

Note: Please stop by the Rural Medicine- DLRI office to fill out the shadowing form

  • Shadow a Family Physician in Calgary and gain one-on-one exposure to family practice.
  • Shadow a rural physician on weekends
  • See real ER action and practice procedures during a weekend on-call
  • Shadow an expectant couple and their family physician from the initial prenatal visits through labor and delivery.

Summer Electives

  • Hands-on experience with a generalist in primary care

Clerkship Options

  • Mandatory 6 week clerkship rotation in Family, O&G, Psych or 3 weeks Peds in a rural/regional community
  • Or opt for the Rural Integrated Community Clerkship and spend 9 months in a family practice setting!

Speaker Series

  • Discuss important issues in Family and Rural Medicine with physician presenters
 

Family and Rural Medicine Wine and Cheese

  • Be inspired by some of Alberta's most passionate physicians. Learn what they love about Family and Rural Medicine.

Urban and Rural Skills Days

  • Learn how to do casting and punch biopsies, perfect your IV starts and suturing technique, practice IUD insertions and intubations, run codes with your classmates, and much more.

R3 Night

  • Hear from Family physicians who personalized their career and lifestyle by taking a third year of residency (R3) in fields such as Aboriginal Health, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics, Obstetrics, Sports Medicine, or Surgery.

Financial Assistance

  • Funding to attend conferences
  • Bursaries for interest in Family and Rural Medicine
