Undergraduate Medical Education (MD Program)

Medical students have lots of opportunities to experience rural medicine. Included are weekend shadowing in a rural ER, Family/Rural Medicine Interest Group activities, summer electives in rural or regional Alberta and clerkship electives and rotations in third year. In 2008 we introduced the Rural Integrated Community Clerkship (now University of Calgary Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship). Funding (travel & accommodation) is available for most activities, please see the  Expense Claims page for more details.

MDCN 330 and 430 Family Medicine Clinical Experience

In first year, students have the opportunity to shadow rural physicians for 3 separate days (MDCN 330) as part of their academic year. In their second year, they continue doing so through MDCN 430 but with a different preceptor in a different location and for 2 days.

Pre- Clerkship Summer Electives

In second year, students have an opportunity to explore their medical interests. Rural Family Medicine electives and regional specialty electives are available throughout Alberta. A minimum of 2 weeks somewhere in rural Alberta can provide a second year medical student the opportunity of experiencing what it's like to be a rural physician.

Clerkship Electives

Rural and regional clerkship electives in many disciplines are available year round.

Clerkship Rotations

Six-week Family Medicine clerkship rotations may be completed in rural or regional communities. Several weeks of the Pediatrics, Psychiatry and O&G rotations may also be completed in regional communities.
