Summer Studentship Program

Designed to help you gain practical experience and accelerate innovation and training in health data science

The Centre for Health Informatics Summer Studentship Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in health research under the supervision of a CHI academic member for 4 months during the summer. This program seeks to encourage students’ consideration of a research career in fields relevant to data science and health informatics. Applicants will be matched to a faculty member residing within CHI based on their chosen academic discipline and research interests.

Value and Term:

Students will receive a stipend of $1,500 per month for 4 months. The studentship must be held during the period of May to August 2021. A 35-hour, full-time work week is expected with up to 2 weeks of vacation time allowed.

Eligibility:

1. Applicants must be a student registered in a full-time undergraduate university degree program in a relevant field (i.e. data science, software engineering, statistics, computer science, health sciences, etc.). Not restricted to University of Calgary students.

2. Applicants must be available for the entire 4-month time commitment.

Research Conduct:

  1. Identify a potential supervisor within our centre that aligns with the research area you’d like to accomplish
  2. All research that involves the use of personal health data must be reviewed and certified as acceptable by the appropriate University Research Ethics Board

Responsibilities:

  1. During the period of the award, students are to maintain regular work hours, unless otherwise agreed to by their supervisor. In no case should the student work more than an average of 35 hours per week.
  2. Students are expected to follow the procedures and rules of the research environment and interact regularly with their supervisor.
  3. Students are required to submit a final report upon the completion of the award.

Review Process:

Each applicant is reviewed by CHI’s administrative team and the relevant faculty members. Based on these reviews, all applicant submissions are assessed to determine the award recipients.

Decision:

Applicants will be informed by email regarding the outcome of their submission. Decisions are final and cannot be appealed.
