Conflict of Interest

Introduction

An effective and principled partnership between faculty members, the school, and industry is critical to realize fully the benefits of biomedical research and ensure continued advances in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Policy

In order to be compliant with the accreditation requirements for LCME/CACMS (undergraduate) and CACME (continuing medical education), and to meet expectations from the Tri-Council and the National Institutes of Health, each faculty of medicine in Canada must have a formalized institutional policy and procedure related to Conflict of Interest disclosure.

In accordance with the Cumming School of Medicine’s (CSM) Disclosure and Management of Potential Conflicts of Interest in Relationships with Industry, all faculty members have an annual duty to:

  • Disclose potential conflicts of interest
  • Mitigate and/or manage any circumstances that could give rise to potential conflicts of interest

Conflicts may be real or perceived, and can occur in conjunction with your clinical, educational, research, administrative or other activities in the CSM. Conflicts of interest may occur when either a faculty member or one of his/her family members has a relationship with industry.

Contact

If you have any questions about the collection or use of conflict of interest information, contact Dr. Todd Anderson, Dean, Cumming School of Medicine.

COI Disclosure Form

To complete a COI disclosure please navigate to myUCalgary > All about me > Employee Self Service > Conflicts of Interest. This disclosure is required even if there is no conflict. Follow the steps to complete the information and submit. Ensure that there is enough detail, and that you are thorough in your description of the conflict of interest in order to facilitate a discussion with your leader.

If there is a potential, perceived or real conflict, the CSM Dean will work with you to create a conflict management plan to help eliminate any actual or perceived private benefit because of the conflict. You may draft a plan in your online disclosure.
