Funding Policy

Students should be aware of the GSE Funding Policy

According to Cumming School of Medicine Graduate Science Education policy, all students will receive a stipend of $21,000 (MSc) or $23,000 (PhD) per year. Students are paid for the duration of their program and these amounts are mandatory.

Students who receive external awards can earn more than the BMB standard salaries, according to the GSE Funding Policy

Entrance Award

Subject to available funding

Students admitted to this program may receive a BMB Entrance Award (subject to available funding). Currently, this award is paid in the first 2 years for PhD students and paid in the first year for MSc students to defray the costs of paying full tuition.

Entrance Awards are paid out one month after students begin their program. PhD students will receive the second year's payment provided that they are meeting program requirements.

The intent of this reimbursement is to assist students during years when they are paying full fees. Entrance Awards will be reduced by any amount that a stipend (paid from a supervisor’s grant) is above the BMB minimum stipend level.

First Author Award

There is a limit of 2 awards per person for the duration of the student's graduate program.

This award has been created in recognition of research achievements made by BMB graduate students. Award value is $300. Students may apply as soon as their publication has been accepted.

Eligibility:
• Student must be currently registered in the BMB Graduate Program
• Student must be the first (or co-first) author of the article
• The publication must be a peer-reviewed research article directly relevant to the student’s thesis research
