BMB Program Specific Awards

Entrance Award


Subject to available funding

International students admitted to this program may receive a BMB Entrance Award (subject to available funding). 

Entrance Awards are paid out one month after students begin their program. PhD students may receive a second year's payment provided that they are meeting program requirements. 

The intent of this reimbursement is to assist international students with the higher tuition fees that they pay.

First Author Award


There is a limit of 2 awards per person for the duration of the student's graduate program.

This award has been created in recognition of research achievements made by BMB graduate students. Award value is $200. Students may apply as soon as their publication has been accepted. 

Eligibility:
• Student must be registered in the BMB Graduate Program at the time the paper is published and when the award is paid out.
• Student must be the first (or co-first) author of the article
• The publication must be a peer-reviewed research article directly relevant to the student’s thesis research. It must contain novel research findings and cannot be a review of the field.
• All program requirements must be met at the time of application (submission of research proposal, annual progress reports, minutes of regular supervisory committee meetings etc)

Travel Awards

Travel Awards are announced throughout the year by the Graduate Program Administrator. Check your ucalgary.ca email address often for these announcements. 

Each student may receive 1 (MSc) or 2 (PhD) travel awards during their degree program. 

To submit an application, fill in the travel Award Form and attach your abstract.

Carol Braat Memorial Award

Award of a $200.00 book prize to a meritorious MSc or PhD student in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, presented at the departmental Celebration of Excellence as a tribute to Carol Braat, a former student in the BMB MSc program.

Gordon H. Dixon Award

A $500.00 award to a meritorious doctoral student in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, presented at the departmental Celebration of Excellence as a tribute to Dr. Dixon's outstanding contributions to scholarship and education. The awardee also presents a lecture.
