Dr. Paul Kubes, PhD, awarded the Order of the University of Calgary 2023 Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases

As one of Canada’s most esteemed immunologists, Dr. Paul Kubes, PhD (Queen’s University) is a world-renowned researcher in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases at UCalgary’s Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. He is internationally recognized for his ground-breaking work in imaging the immune system and complex cellular behaviours in real time, both in vitro and in vivo. He was awarded the Order of the University of Calgary at UCalgary's Spring 2023 convocation ceremony.

Paul is a professor in the Departments of Physiology and Pharmacology, Critical Care, and Microbiology Immunology and Infectious Diseases at UCalgary's Cumming School of Medicine. He was the founding director of the Snyder Institute from 2008-2021. He has led UCalgary’s research strategy for Infections, Inflammation, and Chronic Diseases in the Changing Environment (IICD) since 2015 and held the Canada Research Chair in Leukocyte Recruitment in Inflammatory Disease until its completion.

Paul is recognized for establishing several of UCalgary’s most innovative research facilities, notably the International Microbiome Centre, the newly refurbished Level 3 facility and the Live Cell Imaging Lab. These facilities, along with Paul’s contributions, have put UCalgary and the Snyder Institute on the map as a world-class location for research excellence.

Many ground-breaking contributions to inflammation research are the result of Paul’s dedication and ingenuity, including in mechanisms of leukocyte trafficking, sterile immunity, control of bacterial infection and sepsis, cavity macrophages and injury repair, and the roles of neutrophil extracellular traps in infection control. His work has investigated inflammatory responses in numerous organs including liver, lung, skin, brain and peritoneal cavity. He has published in the highest profile journals including Nature, The Lancet, Cell, Science, Cell Host Microbe, Nature Immunology, Blood, and many more.
