From science to law: Scholarship recipient sets sights on new perspectives
For Heather Larsen, learning has always been more than an academic pursuit. It has been a way of exploring the world and understanding how it works. That curiosity first led her into the sciences and now guides her toward a career in law.
Born and raised in Calgary, Larsen completed a Bachelor of Science in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Alberta. Her academic background gave her a strong foundation in research and analysis, but it was her work outside the classroom that sparked an interest in legal studies and intellectual property.
This interest in intellectual property led Larsen to work at Smart & Biggar, Canada’s largest intellectual property firm. As an intellectual property clerk, she learned about the process of securing patents and trademarks and gained some insight into how the legal profession shapes innovation.
Beyond her work experience, her passion for science extends to an interest in health law, where she sees the potential for meaningful impact.
“There are sometimes competing interests in the health-care system between large pharmaceutical companies and individuals,” she explained. “My background in biology might help me have a greater understanding of these complex situations.”
Gaining new perspectives
Larsen is eager to develop the skills in law school that will allow her to see the world through a new lens. Drawn to the unique way lawyers analyze problems and interpret complex issues, she looks forward to gaining a broader perspective on the world around her through her legal education.
Her sense of curiosity and drive was encouraged from an early age by her parents. Her mother, a former teacher and her father, an engineer, instilled in her discipline and a love of learning. Now, Larsen hopes to grow as both a student and a person during her time at UCalgary Law.
“I am very grateful to Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP for this award, and I am thankful for my family, who have always been so supportive of me.”
