June 2019 - UCalgary and AHS: PartnerApps

Do you work with Alberta Health Services? Would it make your life easier if you could access their clinical applications and file shares from your UCalgary computer? Well then, IT has you covered. Check out PartnerApps, a portal that allows users of Clinibase, Sunrise Clinical Manager, Millennium, and Jeeves to login through UCalgary computers. PartnerApps users must be authorized by AHS to access the clinical applications and Jeeves. A request to use PartnerApps is available here, your UCalgary IT username and password will grant you access to the form.

May 2019 - Shake up your class with Top Hat

Do you take some time in the summer months to revisit your curriculum and think about ways you could update your classes? Maybe you want to learn more about Top Hat, an educational technology that tracks attendance, allows in-class quizzing and polling, interacts with slides, and manages in-class discussions. It’s one way to encourage students to actively engage, without overhauling your curriculum. UCalgary has its own subscription, so you can easily set up an account. An extra bonus? It synchronizes with D2L, so you can push your grades from Top Hat to D2L or export your class list from D2L to Top Hat. If you want to get started this May, you can read more here.

April 2019 - Time for a wellness audit?

Since April is tax season, you might be running around right now worrying about your receipts and trying to avoid being audited. Well, maybe it’s time to slow down and think about your own personal wellness audit. Are you taking care of yourself? Are you making time for your health? There are so many resources on campus to help you do just that! Staff Wellness offers their own free, confidential health check. CSM’s Working Our Way to Wellness Committee offers free group fitness classes in the HRIC atrium. University of Calgary employees and their families have access to Homewood Health, which offers 24/7 assistance with health, career, relationship, financial, and legal solutions. They can help with anything from smoking cessation to pre-retirement planning and so much more.

March 2019 - Financial Spring Cleaning

Despite what our recent weather might suggest, spring is coming! March 20 is right around the corner, so if part of your spring cleaning routine includes tidying up your expenses, you may be in need of assistance. Be on the lookout for internal deadlines related to the end of the fiscal year and visit the Integrated Service Centre (ISC) for help with Research Accounting, Supply Chain Management, Accounts Payable, or Accounts Receivable. Even if you know all about ISC, maybe you don’t know the CSM location moved to a new spot in HSC G204. For more information, visit them online.

February 2019 - What’s a Makerspace?

Has the word ‘makerspace’ been creeping into your consciousness through the radio, newspaper, or internet? Then it’s about time you learned what it means! A makerspace is anything from a low tech to high tech collaborative workshop where people can invent and create. We have our very own makerspace as part of Lab NEXT on the third floor of the Taylor Family Digital Library. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use the makerspace, which includes 3D printing and scanning, vinyl cutters, machines for milling, sewing, embroidery, and more. Users require an orientation to understand the equipment and safety practices before using the space, so register for your orientation today!

January 2019 - Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning: A New Year’s Resolution

Did you make a resolution this year? Was it to learn something new, re-examine your teaching practice, get a grant, or publish more? Even if you aren’t the resolution type, 2019 is the year to get involved with the Taylor Institute. They want to help you improve student learning, develop and publish work on the scholarship of teaching and learning, receive teaching awards and grants, and so much more. There are many ways for you to engage with the Taylor Institute whether you want to read their blog, utilize their online resources, or take a workshop. December 2018 - Surplus Sales

Do you need to equip an office on a shoestring budget? Not to worry, just check out the University of Calgary Surplus Sales! These sales usually feature gently used UCalgary office furniture, office supplies, and AV equipment at very reasonable prices. Sales are every second Friday of the month from 12p.m. to 2:30p.m. in the General Service Warehouse. Wondering where that is? Just look for ‘GS’ on the Main Campus map.

November 2018 - EndNote: Citation Management for Busy People

If you’ve been at the University for more than a few months, you’ve probably heard people mention EndNote but you’re likely too busy to stop and ask what they’re talking about. Well, EndNote is a citation management tool that helps you gather and store your citations and references. The goal of this tool is to cut down the time you waste hunting down your references and formatting them. Sound like something you’d use? Great, because EndNote Online is free for UCalgary faculty and staff through Web of Science! All you need to do is create an account. For a helpful training session, just check the library event calendar for the next EndNote workshop.

October 2018 - Printing is complicated … or not?

If you’ve ever tried to resize a poster or design a tri-fold pamphlet, you know that printing can be complicated. But it doesn’t have to be! Multimedia can do so much to help. They do everything from filling your day-to-day copy, print, scan, and lamination needs to highly specialized services. Multimedia can take you through the entire production process from graphic design and medical illustration to poster printing and mounting. Even if you just want a simple poster, they can set you up with templates to get started. Put your bubble paint and glitter glue away, and visit us at G204 beside the medical bookstore. Your professional printing is right here!

Do you know about all the cool things AV Services at the CSM can do for you? They are more than just the folks you call when your classroom equipment isn’t working! AV Services also offers portrait and on-location photography, video production, videoconferencing, and a wide range of equipment for use. You can even book time with them to go through the how-tos of operating equipment in your scheduled classroom. Did you know that Lynda.com offers instructional videos on everything from eLearning technology to succession planning? You can answer a burning question by watching a two minute video on your phone, or sit down and complete an entire learning program. Best of all, the University of Calgary maintains a subscription so that it’s free to staff and faculty (academic and clinical). All you need to create an account is your UCalgary email address. May 2018 - Installing Microsoft Office on your personal computer

Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus can be installed (free of charge) on faculty and staff members' personal computers for the term of your employment. For Windows and Macintosh (where supported by Microsoft) computers, full versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook can be used. All you need is your IT username and password!
