Practical Leadership for University Scholars

PLUS Program Details

  • Available to CSM full-time and clinical faculty. Select places available to residents, fellows, students, and community partners.

  • PLUS 1 and 2 are both one-day programs that run 3-4 times throughout the year. PLUS 3s are four-part programs that run 1-2 times per year. PLUS 4 is a four-part program and runs 2-4 times per year.

  • Small registration fee to cover the costs of catering and materials for in-person events.

  • Courses build on one another, but can still be taken out of order.

  • PLUS 1 and 2 are recommended for those looking to develop their leadership skills.

  • PLUS 3s are recommended for those with leadership responsibilities in specific and relevant areas (education, budgeting, administration, etc.).

  • PLUS 4 is for advanced, complex, and specialized topics within leadership.

PLUS 1: Foundations of Leadership

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe common leadership styles.
  • Describe leadership pitfalls and solutions experienced by people with personalities similar to your own.
  • Conduct a personal wellness audit.
  • Conduct a personal leadership skill audit.
  • Develop a strategic plan to guide your own leadership development.

Explores your leadership identity; how it changes under crisis; how to leverage your strengths, and how to be intentional about growth opportunities.

PLUS 2: Leadership in Action

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore and refine the mandate of your initiative/project.
  • Get buy-in from key stakeholders for your projects.
  • Describe the key elements of successful teams and create plans to strengthen your own team.
  • Hold important conversations about difficult issues.

Focused on bringing your projects to life. Participants will role-play through challenging scenarios, examine their own projects, and receive and offer peer consultations.

 

PLUS 3s

PLUS 3A: Administrative Leadership

Learning Objectives:

  • Set up committees for success.
  • Run effective and efficient meetings.
  • Manage your time to focus on priorities.
  • Effectively manage your team.

This four-part virtual course is designed for those who lead committees, meetings, manage time as a leader, or who manage personnel in a unionized environment. It focuses on enhancing your technical skills in administrative leadership. This course is ideal for all those who have worked their way up to a leadership role but still feel like there are activities they need to engage in that they've never been taught how to do.

 

PLUS 3E: Educational Leadership

This four-part program is designed for those leading educational units, programs, or initiatives. Over multiple days, you will focus on enhancing your skills in educational strategy and building your competencies in curriculum development and review. You will also explore program evaluation, get some time to role-play handling tricky educational issues, and more.

PLUS 4: Reconciliation Leadership Foundations

This new program is for leaders interested in incorporating the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action into their work.

This is a four-part virtual course and is open to those who currently hold leadership roles in CSM or AHS. This is an intensive course which will involve some pre-work in order to get the most out of your class time. It will ask you to interrogate your own beliefs while giving you tools to make meaningful change.


Claiming CME Credits for OFDP Workshops

Non-certified credits are awarded for those activities that have not been formally reviewed by the College but that comply with the College’s definition of CPD.

PLACE: Practical Leadership and Community Engagement

Are you the employee of a non-profit and looking to develop your leadership skills? This FREE two-day leadership workshop is exclusively tailored to non-profit organizations in Calgary and only runs once per year.

By the end of this program, participants will:

  • Be able to describe common leadership styles
  • Have conducted a personal wellness audit
  • Have conducted a personal leadership skill audit
  • Have developed a plan to guide your own leadership development
  • Explore Key Aspects of project mandates
  • Get buy-in from key stakeholders for your projects
  • Describe the key elements of successful teams and create plans to strengthen your own team
  • Hold important conversations about difficult issues
