This is a general guideline from the Postgraduate Medical Education Committee.  It is expected that Residency Training Programs will also have more specific policies that reflect the unique needs of each discipline.

When a resident concludes that a transfer to another Residency Training Program might be beneficial, the Resident and the Program Director must be assured that the request to transfer is managed in an objective, fair, equitable and confidential manner.

External Transfers

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada has produced National Guidelines for trainees wishing to transfer from one Canadian University to another. These guidelines are intended to provide a transparent process that is clear to both the Resident and Universities involved. Prior to engaging in discussion regarding a transfer, it is the responsibility of the Resident to review the national guidelines as well as his or her home school’s transfer guideline / policy.

External Transfer requests (both incoming and outgoing) should be sent to the PGME Registration and Administration Manager

Internal Transfers

Current Residents interested in transferring to another program at the UofC are required to participate in the internal transfer process, which was developed to ensure that trainees are provided equal opportunity to apply for available positions.
