CAN-DRE Study: A Triple-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Randomized Clinical Trial of Cannabinoids for Drug-Resistant Epilepsy in Adults and Children

We are recruiting children between 2 and 18 years of age who have Drug-Resistant Epilepsy (DRE) to participate in the CAN-DRE clinical research study. Participants will take part in the study for 116 days and complete four study visits.

The primary goal of this study is to learn how cannabinoids (CBD) may affect seizure frequency in individuals with DRE.

All eligible participants will receive the investigational medication (CBD), as well as study-related medical examinations and laboratory tests at no cost. Compensation for time and travel may be provided.

You or your child may be eligible to participate if:

• You/your child are 24 months to 18 years old at the time of enrollment
• You/your child have a diagnosis of Drug-Resistant Epilepsy, defined as having not achieved seizure freedom despite adequate trials of two anti-seizure medications
• You/your child experience 4 or more clinically recognizable seizures per month

You or your child may not be eligible to participate if:

• There is a diagnosis of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures
• There has been a change in anticonvulsant therapy within the past 30 days, including adjustments in medication or vagus nerve stimulator settings
• A ketogenic diet was started within the past 6 months
  • (Participants stable on the ketogenic diet for more than 6 months may be eligible)
• A vagus nerve stimulator was implanted and activated within the past 12 months

Additional medical criteria will be evaluated by study doctors to determine eligibility.
