Chronic Cough

What is a chronic cough?

  • A cough which lasts more than 4 weeks and is surprisingly one of the most common reasons people visit their family doctor.
  • Can affect your quality of life, your activities and your sleep. Often it can cause urinary incontinence (uncontrolled passing of urine), retching, vomiting, chest pain, dizziness and many other symptoms.
  • Can be caused by non-life threatening conditions such as post-nasal drip, mild asthma, bronchitis, smoking or smoker's cough, mild COPD, viral infections like the flu or a cold, gastroesophageal reflux or a combination of these.
  • Rarely is related to more serious conditions such as lung cancer or tuberculosis.

How can we help?

The Chronic Cough Clinic at the Foothills Medical Centre helps people whose cough is not a symptom of a serious medical condition, such as lung cancer or tuberculosis, but is still negatively impacting their lives.

  • This is an Alberta Health Services program led by Dr Stephen Field (Respirologist)
  • A Certified Respiratory Educator will help you manage and bring your chronic cough under control, in addition to providing consistent follow up as required

Need a referral?

  • Discuss with your doctor about being referred to the Chronic Cough Clinic. Your doctor can then complete your referral online.
