Budget services

At the University of Calgary, budgeting and financial management of clinical trials are managed in two different workflows depending on whether the funding source is industry or non-industry (federal funding, foundations, or grants). While the CCCR primarily handles industry-funded projects, we also provide pre-submission budget review for researchers seeking grant funding.

Our experienced financial professionals work with researchers to provide budget guidance at the pre-award as well as the contract stage. By collaborating with you at this important stage, we’ll help develop accurate clinical trial budgets, structure fiscally sound projects, and provide financial advice that helps prevent cost overruns.

Our budgeting services include:

Industry budget review:

CCCR budget experts provide assistance to researchers to help develop accurate and timely clinical research budgets (includes review of proposed sponsor budget and payment terms). Following review, budget recommendations will be provided directly to the research team. Note: PI or coordinator must submit the initial budget along with contract/protocol onto the CSM Legal SharePoint system to be reviewed. This service is available to industry-funded clinical research projects.

Industry negotiations:

The CCCR team is skilled in negotiating trial budgets and payments terms with industry sponsors. With over 100 budgets negotiated annually and access to insights from previous successful negotiations, we’re able to negotiate fiscally sound contracts and facilitate quicker sponsor approval.

  • Assistance with budget and payment terms negotiation with sponsor (to ensure funding adequately covers the cost of the study).
  • Full coordination of communications with sponsor - from initial offer to counter offers.
  • Facilitating agreement on mutually acceptable budget and payment terms with the sponsor (in consultation with PI and study team).

Pre-award budget review:

CCCR budget experts provide investigators with thorough reviews of pre-award clinical trial applications, ensuring all costs have been considered (including institutional overhead) before the application is submitted.

The CCCR holds weekly meetings (scheduled by appointment) to review pre-award applications. This service is available to non-industry funded research projects.
