RCPSC Mentor of the Year Award
he Mentor of the Year award was established to recognize Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in good standing who have had a significant impact on the career development of students, residents and/or Fellows. Dr. Sean Grondin, Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the Section of Thoracic Surgery, has been named the Region 1 recipient for 2014.
Dr. Grondin graduated from medical school (1990) and completed his General Surgery Residency at Dalhousie University in 1996. In 1998, Dr. Grondin completed his Thoracic Surgery Residency at the University of Toronto. Dr. Grondin subsequently completed a Thoracic Oncology Fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a Master’s Degree in Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard School of Public Health. In 1999, Dr. Grondin completed a second fellowship in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Grondin is currently Program Director for the Thoracic Surgery Residency program at the University of Calgary. He has been active in medical education at several levels has mentored multiple medical students and residents. He developed the University of Calgary Medical School Leadership Lecture Series and the Department of Surgery Professional Development workshop Series. He has published several peer-reviewed articles on surgical education.
Dr. Grondin has held numerous leadership positions including Chair of the Royal College Exam Committee for Thoracic Surgery. He is currently Co-Chair of the University of Calgary Medical Group and sits on the Board of several thoracic surgical societies.
Dr. Grondin’s particular clinical areas of interest include all aspects of thoracic oncology as well as the application of minimally invasive surgical techniques to the treatment of benign diseases such as hyperhidrosis. His research interests include workforce planning, leadership skill development and surgical education.
