Continuing Professional Development

Since July 2016 Dr. Raedler has been serving as the CPD Director for the Department of Psychiatry.

The Department of Psychiatry of the Cumming School of Medicine offers a variety of CPD-activities.  Most of these CPD-activities are multidisciplinary in nature and are attended by different professional groups, including psychiatrists, other physicians, scientists, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, occupational and recreational therapists as well as trainees.

The multi-disciplinary CPD-Committee of the Department of Psychiatry of the Cumming School of Medicine currently consists to 19 members.  The CPD-Committee coordinates all CPD-activities through our department.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining our team as we are always looking for new members.

We appreciate your ongoing support of our CPD-activities.  Please keep in mind that our CPD-activities are only viable if they are attended by a sufficient number of participants.  We are grateful for the financial support through our Department of Psychiatry.  Without this support many of our activities would not be possible.

Grand Rounds

Schedule

Our weekly Grand Rounds are held every Tuesday from 1200 – 1300.  Due to Covid -19 they are available via Zoom. This allows individuals to participate in Grand Rounds from anywhere on their computers or cell-phones.

We look forward to coming back together at Foothills Medical Centre in room G500 when it is safe to do so.

CME Credits

Grand Rounds Accreditation is approved from the Royal College of Physicians.  Thanks to this accreditation we continue to be able to provide Section 1 CME-credits for Grand Rounds.  Physicians who wish to claim CME-credits for attending Grand Rounds need to submit an electronic evaluation.  Please contact Dr. Raedler or Anne Enders if you are not receiving the email-link for this evaluation.

Extras

We occasionally offer Grand Rounds that are supported by the pharmaceutical industry.  While we cover the honorarium for these Grand Rounds, we take advantage of national and international speakers who are brought to Calgary by the pharmaceutical industry.  The CPD-Committee composed a set of guidelines that apply to all Grand Rounds presenters that are supported by the pharmaceutical industry.  These guidelines maintain our high standards for Grand Rounds and will ensure that we remain in compliance with the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Grand Rounds presentations cover a variety of different topics that are of interest to the different members of the department.  In addition, we also offer updates on research activities through the Mathison Centre, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, the Strategic Clinical Networks as well as the Psychopharmacology Research Unit (PRU).  We are always looking for suggestions for speakers or topics for Grand Rounds.  Please forward all suggestions to Dr. Raedler, Anne Enders or any member of the CPD-Committee.

Staying Up to Date

The Grand Rounds schedule is updated weekly via email.  Please contact Dustin Morris if you wish to be included in our Grand Rounds email distribution list.  The Grand Rounds schedule, as well as all information on all CPD activities are on the Department of Psychiatry - Events Calendar.  We also post learning objectives, an abstract of the presentation, as well as biographic information on the speakers on the departmental website Events calendar.  We appreciate your help in informing us of all upcoming activities.

Other Educational Activities

In addition to departmental Grand Rounds some clinical sites offer their own Grand Rounds.  Our department is also involved in day-long updates in different areas including Mood Day, Psychosis Day, Women’s Health Day, Addiction Day, Geriatrics Day, Psychotherapy Day and Forensics Day. Due to Covid-19 all of these events have been available ½ days on Zoom.

Every year, our department offers the Psychiatry Online Literature Review Course (POLRC), an online journal club that is attended by both urban and rural psychiatrists.  In 2020 we had 46 participants for this program.

Psychiatry Quarterly Updates

In 2019 we started a new format of educational activities, ‘Psychiatry Quarterly Updates’. They are two to three hours sessions that focus on a single topic.  Participants earn a total MOC Section 3 Self-Assessment – 3.75 hours.  We have covered Alcohol Use Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Psychosis, Trauma Day, OCD and Neuropsychiatry.

At this time we have put a hold on PQU’s until we can all attend in person.
