Dr. Bismar’s research focuses mainly on prostate cancer in two areas; low-intermediate disease whose patients are enrolled in Active surveillance programs with the aim to develop clinical signatures to guide urologist on follow-up protocols, and when to implement definite therapy, thus promoting “Precision Active Surveillance guidelines”. The second area is related to the development of neuroendocrine prostate cancer post hormonal and radiotherapy, where his main objective is to understand the genomic underlying in increased risk for such differentiation post hormonal and radiotherapy.

My primary research interest is in placental pathology. In collaboration with clinical teams and basic researchers we aim to get a better understanding of the impact of inflammatory and vascular placental pathologies on pregnancy outcomes, and child and maternal health. Other research interests include the pathology of immune-mediated gastrointestinal and liver disorders in children, and soft tissue tumors and vascular anomalies in children and adolescents.

Dr. Chan is a clinician-scientist and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Calgary. As a neuropathologist with a focus in oncology, her clinical expertise is in the diagnostic evaluation of pediatric and adult brain tumours. She has expertise in molecular oncology, and also runs an active research program in brain tumour biology. Her research program applies concepts from developmental neurobiology to further understand mechanisms of disease in brain tumorigenesis. Her lab is examining the intersection of growth factor signaling and intrinsic determinants such as transcription factor function in cell fate determination and proliferation in neural development and cancer.

Senior clinician scientist with expertise in medical microbiology and infectious diseases. Current research is focussed on evaluation, development, and implementation of novel non-culture-based methods for detection and surveillance of infectious diseases and bacterial antimicrobial resistance. Application of these methods include population-based studies of the epidemiology of antibiotic resistance, anaerobes causing invasive infections, STIs, and infections in cancer patients. She has published more than 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts/conference proceedings, reviews, and book chapters. She has co-authored and been a Section Editor for several major textbooks including Koneman’s Color Atlas and Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology, 7th Ed.), Clinical Microbiology Procedures Handbook, 3rd, 4th and 5th Ed. and Clinical Laboratory Management, 3rd Ed.

Dr. Lawrence de Koning completed a PhD in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University in 2009, and concurrent postdoctoral fellowships in nutritional epidemiology and clinical chemistry at Harvard University from 2009-2012. He became board certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in 2013 and a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry in 2015. Dr. de Koning works as a pediatric clinical biochemist at Alberta Children’s Hospital, a consultant clinical biochemist for Rockyview General Hospital and has numerous clinical and research interests including biomarkers and epidemiology of pediatric and perinatal conditions, laboratory quality improvement, cardiovascular disease, and nutrition.

Dr Hyrcza is has completed a combined MD/PhD program at the University of Toronto. His PhD thesis focussed on molecular biology of type I interferon response and its role in HIV progression. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Calgary with research interests in molecular pathology of head and neck neoplasms such as salivary and lacrimal gland tumours and squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. He is also interested in quality assessment in pathology and in molecular pathology of endocrine tumours.

My current research is mainly focused on the Calgary Brain Bank (CBB). This repository is approved to bank both CNS tissues from patients with neurodegenerative diseases as well as normal controls. Since 2016, the CBB has about 165 donations. These include individuals who died with Alzheimer disease (AD), Parkinson disease (PD) and other Lewy body diseases (LBD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), multisystem atrophy (MSA), frontotemporal dementia (FTD-TDP), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and multiple sclerosis (MS), along with people who died without known neurological diseases. My research has been to bank and distribute tissues. I also pathologically characterize these donations in significant anatomic detail, to determine the patterns of neuroanatomic degeneration. I have recently focused on autopsies with mixed pathological changes, which increase in aging but can also be present in younger individuals. I have a significant collaboration with Dr. Peter Stys, who has been doing spectral analysis of the different forms of amyloid-like proteins in neurodegenerative diseases. My clinical research also includes working with clinicians on various reports that require pathology.

Dr Margaret Kelly is a Professor with full Tenure and a Clinician-Scientist in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. An Anatomical Pathologist with subspecialization in thoracic pathology, she is the director of the Thoracic Pathology Fellowship program, a member of the Snyder Institute for Chronic Disease and the Alberta Childrens Hospital Research Institute and holds the research Chair in Pediatric Respirology at the University of Calgary. Her research interests include the pathology of asthma, interstitial lung disease and lung cancer. She has received grant funding from the Alberta Heritage Foundation, the Canadian Institute of Health Research and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and has over 70 refereed publications, including papers in Cell, Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Khan obtained his Ph.D. in Human Molecular Genetics in India in 2006. He completed his postdoctoral training and clinical fellowship at the University of Calgary. Dr. Khan is a certified Diplomat of the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI). Dr. Khan has more than 21 years of experience in Transplant Immunology, Cancer Genomics, and Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. Based on his research, Dr. Khan has published over 105 research articles in scientific journals like Science, Blood, Transplantation, and Blood Advances. Dr. Khan has led the development, validation, and implementation of several advanced clinical molecular diagnostic tests including next-generation sequencing-based comprehensive genomic profiling for myeloid malignancies and solid tumors; Serum-based cytokine profiling, NGS-based COVID-19 variant detection, and post-bone-marrow transplantation engraftment monitoring testing.

- Diagnostic biomarker application: As clinician scientist and gynecological pathologist, he is recognized for making major contributions to applying diagnostic biomarkers for ovarian carcinoma subclassification into histotypes. His laboratory developed a 4 marker immunohistochemical algorithm that classifies ovarian carcinomas into five major histotypes with an accuracy near 90%, which has been adopted by the 2020 WHO classification of Female Genital Tumours. His laboratory showed that optimized p53 immunohistochemistry achieves 97% accuracy in predicting the TP53 mutation status in ovarian carcinomas, allowing p53 immunohistochemistry to now be used as robust diagnostic test.
- Biomarker discovery: He used proteomic screens to discover new biomarkers that improve diagnostic accuracy particularly of endometrioid carcinomas, and was involved in the discovery of co-inactivation of ARID1B and ARID1A as a mutual exclusive mechanism of dedifferentiation in endometrial and ovarian endometrioid carcinomas. He was involved in the discovery of the pathognomonic FOXL2 mutation in adult granulosa cell tumor.
- Predictive biomarker development: As part of the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Association consortium, he used this resource to validate the prognostic value of several key biomarkers in ovarian cancer including ER/PR for endometrioid and CD8, as well as CCNE1 for tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma, which leads to a potential utility as predictive biomarker.

Dr. Mansoor is a professor and consultant Hematopathologist with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Calgary. His translational research focuses on leukemia and lymphoma biology through the utilization of various genomic and proteomic platforms. His current work comprises translational studies evaluating oncogenic signaling pathways and their linkage with clinical outcomes in aggressive B-cell lymphoma and the discovery of novel targets for precision medicine. Over the last ten years, he has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles, obtained more than $500,000 in direct peer-reviewed funding as an investigator, and trained over 100 undergraduate, graduate (MSc/Ph.D.), clinical trainees, and post-doctoral scientists. He served as Chair of the examination committee on Pathology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2012-2022). He is also a member of the review board of leading pathology journals.

Dr. Naugler’s research centers around 3 themes:
- Epidemiology of diseases and risk factors. He uses a variety of tools including big data and machine learning approaches, as well as geospatial analysis of lab data matched with other administrative datasets in this work.
- Effectiveness of laboratory testing in Health system outcomes. This work matches health outcomes with test utilization and individual and aggregate test results to inform health system improvements.
- Epidemiology of infectious diseases. In collaboration with colleagues in microbiology and infectious diseases, he studies the epidemiology of infectious diseases through the use of administrative data, geospatial analysis and computer models.

Dr. Nikolic completed her doctoral studies focusing on the role of epigenetic factors in glioblastoma cell function and tumour progression, using epigenetic and bioinformatics techniques. Dr. Pillai is Professor and Head of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, with adjunct appointments in Medicine and Microbiology (MIID) at the University of Calgary. He practices in both Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. His research interests comprise (i) translational studies evaluating cost-effectiveness and outcomes of new diagnostic tests; (ii) developing point-of-care and near-patient diagnostic technology for application in resource-limited settings internationally and (iii) understanding the pathogenesis of infectious diseases using 'omics' approaches. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles, obtained over $5 million in direct peer-reviewed funding as a principal investigator and over $10 million in overall funding over the last 10 years from Tri-Council and other sources, and trained over 30 undergraduate, graduate (MSc/PhD), clinical trainees, and post-doctoral scientists in his laboratory. He was recently named 2021 Peak Scholar at the University of Calgary and Fellows of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) in 2023 . He has served on Editorial Boards of leading journals of IDSA and American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and several international grant review panels. Dr Pitout is a Professor at the Cummings Medical School, University of Calgary and Medical Microbiologist at Dynalife Laboratories Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His main research interests are resistance to antimicrobial agents among Gram-negative bacteria especially the laboratory detection, characterization, molecular epidemiology, and evolution of bacteria with -lactamases. He has been involved in near patient testing, population-based studies, and the roles of MDR clones and plasmids among bacteria producing the extended-spectrum -lactamases and carbapenemases. Dr Pitout has been tracking successful MDR clones locally and globally. More recent research projects involve the underlying reasons for the success of such clones and ways to predict the next global MDR clone. He is an Editor for Emerging Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Reviews and serves on the Editorial boards of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He has published over 200 peer reviewed manuscripts in this field.

Dr. Kiril Trpkov is a Professor of Pathology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His area of expertise includes uropathology and his recent work has focused on characterizing novel kidney tumor entities. Dr. Trpkov has been involved with several national and international organizations, including WHO, USCAP, IAP and ICCR in establishing guidelines, practice standards and educational activities in uropathology. He has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles, numerous book chapters, and other scholarly contributions. Dr. Trpkov has given lectures, courses, slide seminars, and workshops in uropathology on all continents. He was a founding member of the Genitourinary Pathology Society (GUPS), and from 2019 - 2021 he served as the first President of the GUPS. GUPS is an international subspecialty organization that aims to advance the care of patients with urologic diseases by encouraging best practices, research and education in urologic pathology.
