Intersections of Gender, Disability and Carework, Finding Strength in Sharing our Stories

Join us for the First Annual Care Conference hosted by the Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies graduate program on November 5th and 6th, 2021 via Zoom.

Present

The Care Conference Organizing Committee invites presentation proposals in the upcoming virtual Care Conference: Intersections of Gender, Disability, and Carework, Finding Strength in Sharing our Stories on November 5th and 6th, 2021.

We are looking for both university students and members of the community to share their stories and experiences doing or receiving carework. Carework encompasses informal care such as child or elder care in our homes, as well as formal care such as paid work in the community, clinics, and facilities (i.e. long term care facilities and hospitals). We are hoping to hear from people who have experienced disability, autistic people, and others who have received care, as well as caregivers and disabled caregivers.

Undergraduate and graduate students from across Canada specializing in different academic disciplines  are invited to present their work on topics of intersectionality in carework. Together we can share knowledge, build connections and understanding and work towards a thriving community that integrates research and lived experiences. Students who present will be given the option to receive presentation feedback from University of Calgary faculty members. Presentations can be pre-recorded poster presentations or live with a Q & A session on the afternoon of November 5th.

From community members we want to hear your stories and learn how your experiences with gender, race, or disability have impacted your ability to give or receive care, and what you would like students, researchers, and future clinicians to know. Our conference will provide space for university students to present their work and for community members to present their experiences, stories, and wisdom. We invite you to share your experiences at our online conference through art, music, poetry, talks, or panel presentations. Please fill out the form below or if this form presents a barrier for you send a short description of your presentation idea to careconference@ucalgary.ca

Attend

Students, researchers, and community members are invited to join us virtually to share knowledge on the intersections of gender, disability, and carework, engage in professional development, and to build networks across departments, universities, and communities. Through sharing our stories across different academic disciplines and community experiences we build connections and work towards a thriving community that integrates research and lived experiences.

The first day of the conference will be dedicated to student presentations, while the second day of the conference will be focused on engaging the community through moderated dialogue, informal and formal discussions, and community presentations. Conference attendees will be invited to take an active part in participating in research during the dialogue portion, where we will be researching the effects of respectful discussion on participants' beliefs and understandings.
