What is Vascular Cognitive Impairment?

Vascular Cognitive Impairment (VCI) is a condition where the function of the brain is affected by diseases of the blood vessels, leading to problems with memory and thinking. It is the second most common cause of dementia, after Alzheimer’s disease.

Who Are We?

We are a group of doctors, nurses, students, and research assistants who are looking to discover better ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat the conditions that cause vascular cognitive impairment, including treatment and prevention of stroke.

The research group is directed by Dr. Eric Smith, the Katthy Taylor Chair in Vascular Dementia at the University of Calgary.
