Therapeutic Brain Stimulation / Research Lab
Welcome to our lab website. It contains information about our research, (publications, funding), people, and provides links to related websites for information or news.
Our lab is dedicated to understanding how neuromodulation therapies, therapeutic electrical stimulation (DBS) affects the brain and nervous system. Recently we have also expanded into studying focused ultrasound (FUS) as a new therapeutic and neuromodulatory tool. We also aim to develop a broader approach to neural prostheses, their development, based on solid principles of neuroscience, and implementation into clinical practice.
As a clinician-scientist who practices stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, I am most interested in the translation of laboratory findings to people. I see and operate on patients with movement disorders, pain, nervous system injuries, and psychiatric conditions. While the stimulation techniques available today are beneficial for many of these conditions, they require refinement and further investigation to improve their performance and patient outcomes. Also, as the field of neural prosthetics expands, their potential to rehabilitate and improve quality of life is profound.
You may notice that our photos are from outings we have done as a lab over these years, including caving, an escape room, white water rafting, horse-back riding, curling, bowling, playing paintball, or most commonly hiking/picnicking. We try to do these with collaborating labs and the graduating trainee often suggests the activity. These give you an idea of all that is available in and close to Calgary.
Please browse, enjoy, and feel free to provide feedback or contact us for further information.
