We are investigating the neuronal control of respiration, focusing primarily on respiratory rhythm generation and chemosensitivity. As many as 20 million people in North America may suffer from sleep apnoea, including 40% of patients with chronic heart failure and 60% of stroke victims. Sudden infant death is the major cause of infant mortality in the first year of life and neonatal apnoea is the primary reason for admission into neonatal intensive care units. The social and economic consequences of these respiratory disorders motivate our investigation into the fundamental mechanisms involved in the neuronal control of respiration.
