Image Science
The Image Science Division is the basic research arm of the Department of Radiology that brings together imaging scientists across the spectrum from neuro to musculoskeletal, to cardiovascular, to paediatrics. Under the leadership of Dr. Bruce Pike since 2013, the Image Science Division has now grown to consist of over 10 faculty members distributed across 5 centres.
Facilities
The Seaman Family MR Centre, located at the Foothills Campus, houses our adult human magnetic resonance imaging infrastructure and the NeuroImaging Research Unit – a core facility that supports neuroimaging research studies from across campus. Our paediatric MRI research is conducted at the Child and Adolescent Imaging Research Centre (CAIR) located at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Small animal MRI and near infrared imaging research is based at the Experimental Imaging Centre.
Our new CFI-funded Bone Imaging Lab is well equipped with micro-CT, dual-energy absorptiometry, and MRI. Our cardiac imaging research is based at the Stephenson Cardiac Imaging Centre and is a collaborative effort with the Department of Cardiology and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. Our newest addition to the Image Science Division is the Healthy Brain Aging labs of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute with a team of other neuroscientists and clinician-scientists to tackle key problems related to brain aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
Research
In the Image Science Division we train undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students in programs such as Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Medical Sciences, Kinesiology, and Physics. We also house an NSERC-CREATE training program called International and Industrial Imaging Training – i3T. With a current group of approximately 14 faculty, 15 staff, and 70 trainees, we are amongst the top imaging research groups in Canada. A broad range of research agencies, such as CIHR, NSERC, CFI, AIHS, Brain Canada, Heart and Stroke, and the MS Society, fund our faculty members and we are always looking for outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
