About BCID
Since 1982 the biennial Banff Conference on Infectious Diseases has been a unique forum for internationally-recognized experts to present their research on pathogenesis and other aspects of infectious diseases and host defenses. The conference is symposium-based with four invited speakers in each of six different areas.
BCID was brought to life by the combined vision of Dr. Bill Paranchych (Biochemistry and later Biological Sciences, University of Alberta) and Dr. Don Woods (Microbiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases, University of Calgary) in 1982 and has been organized every two years by faculty from both universities ever since. Over the past 38 years, the BCID has attracted internationally and nationally recognized experts in the fields of microbial pathogenesis and host defense research to foster collaborative research and interactions among many related infectious diseases disciplines.
The BCID is typically attended by approximately 100 - 150 scientists, clinician scientists, and their trainees from across Canada, hosts approximately 25 seminars by faculty members/trainees, and offers poster presentation opportunities for students and postdocs. Thus, the BCID has been a vital part of the training environment of students interested in joining us in our effort to diagnose and fight infectious diseases.
