MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS)

The first comprehensive focused ultrasound (FUS) program in Western Canada.

The MR-guided Focused UltraSound (MRgFUS) program was started in Calgary, Alberta in 2017 with the generous support of community donors, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and the Cumming Medical Research Fund. The program consists of a team of scientists and physicians, specialized in Neurosciences, Neurosurgery, Radiology, Psychiatry, and Biomedical Engineering, who utilize the latest in medical technology to advance surgical treatment options for patients living with a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions.

The MRgFUS team at The University of Calgary is currently treating patients with essential tremor. We continue to study imaging and methods to optimize the procedure to improve patient outcomes. We have also expanded to include the treatment of patients with severe medication-resistant Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Focused ultrasound is a revolutionary and promising technology that is transforming medical care in Canada and around the world.

Our Vision

Our vision is to establish a world-class preclinical and human MRgFUS infrastructure platform and research program that is fully integrated and accessible to all researchers at the University of Calgary and collaborators throughout Western Canada.

Our research program is organized along three major themes: Neurosurgery, Drug Delivery, and Neuromodulation
