The Alberta Palliative Care Atlas

The Alberta edition of the Canadian Atlas of Palliative Care was created by the University of Calgary's Division of Palliative Medicine, Alberta Health Services, the Covenant Health Palliative Institute, and the Alberta Hospice Palliative Care Association, in collaboration with Pallium Canada and the Joshua Shadd Pallium Research Hub at McMaster University.

For the first time, this Atlas provides a comprehensive, visual snapshot of palliative care service provision in Alberta, in 2023. Demand for palliative care services is increasing in Canada and this Atlas serves as a current state map, from which to celebrate innovation, plan and grow.

The Atlas aims to:

1. Describe the current state of palliative care services via several domains and elements (or “indicators”) ;

2. Raise awareness of areas that require special focus (e.g., pediatric populations, people experiencing homelessness, LGBTQ2SIA+, recent immigrants & refugees, and people living in correctional facilities).;

3. Identify and summarize similarities and variations that exist across jurisdictions;

4. Compare the status across different domains and elements within Canada and internationally;

5. Facilitate health systems change by highlighting successes for the purposes of spread and adaptation in other jurisdictions.
