Reducing Injury Sustained by Kidneys

Heart procedures such as angiograms and angioplasties are essential for diagnosing and treating heart disease. However, some patients may develop contrast-associated acute kidney injury (AKI), a serious complication that can lead to longer hospital stays, dialysis, and poorer outcomes.

Researchers from the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta have implemented a bedside decision-support tool that helps care teams identify high-risk patients and personalize the use of contrast dye and intravenous fluids during procedures.

Now used in all three cardiac catheterization facilities in Alberta, the tool supports safer, more personalized care for patients undergoing heart procedures.
