Chun and Muruve Lab Hike 2021

Arthur Lau

Dr. Lau is a research scientist at Dr. Muruve’s lab. He completed a BSc with Honours at the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario with a focus on kidney transplantation and immunology. In 2014 Arthur moved to Calgary to continue training as a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Muruve’s. He was funded by the Cumming School of Medicine and the Beverly Phillips Rising Star fellowships. Dr. Lau has coauthored 14 publications in journals such as Cell, Journal of Clinical Investigation and Cell reports. Dr. Lau specializes in developing in vivo models of renal disease and intravital microscopy imaging of the kidney. His current research focus is on elucidating mechanisms of immune surveillance in the kidney and developing therapeutics against acute kidney injury.

Esteban Elias

Dr. Elias just joined Dr Muruve’s lab in Sept 2020 to pursue a postdoctoral research position supported by Beverley Phillips Scholarship Program and Cumming School of Medicine Postdoctoral Scholarship.

Dr. Elias obtained his BSc from National University of La Plata and his PhD from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a PhD student Esteban worked at the Laboratory of Cancer Immunology, Institute of Experimental Medicine – CONICET - National Academy of Medicine, Buenos Aires, Argentina. His thesis focused on the effect of novel drugs on malignant and non-malignant cells from chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients and it was supported by fellowships from Agencia – FonCyT and the Argentinian National Research Council (CONICET). Esteban has co-authored more than 11 scientific articles in journals such as Haematologica, American Journal of Hematology and International Journal of Cancer.

Brayden Lyons

Mr. Lyons just joined Dr. Muruve's lab as a graduate student working towards completing a PhD in Immunology. Brayden completed his BSc in Biology/Psychology at the University of Alberta and finished his MSc in Experimental Surgery in 2019. Brayden’s current research interests focus on pigment-induced nephrotoxicity. His work aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms driving acute kidney injury following rhabdomyolysis and hemolysis with the hope of developing efficacious treatment options.

Sisay Belay

Sisay is a MSc student in Immunology who is working on identifying different the phenotype and potential function of macrophage populations in the kidney. He is interested in understanding how macrophages contribute to repair and resolution of inflammation in acute and chronic kidney diseases. Sisay is originally from Ethiopia and obtained his training at the University of Gondar.

Paula Brandt

Paula is an Honours student at Dr Muruve’s lab. This is her third year in the lab. She is completing the last year of an Honours BSc majoring in Physics and minoring in Biology at the University of Calgary. She is working on the detection and typing of renal amyloidosis by spectroscopy using fluorophore K114 and kidney patient biopsies.

Graciela Andonegui

Dr. Andonegui has joined the Precision Medicine in Nephrology team as the program manager in 2019. She had been a research scientist in the Department of Critical Care Medicine since 2009.  She earned a BSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in Immunology from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and completed a clinical biochemistry residency at the Children’s Hospital Dr. Pedro de Elizalde in Buenos Aires.  Graciela moved to the University of Calgary in 1999 and was funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research through her postdoctoral studies with the Immunology Research Group and Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases.  Her research has examined the role of innate immune cells in sepsis in affected organs such as the brain and lungs.  In addition, she has worked on various collaborative projects involving both basic and clinical research.

Dr. Andonegui has published 32 peer-reviewed studies in journals such as Journal of Clinical Investigation, Blood and Journal of Immunology. Dr. Andonegui has also been involved in supervising and mentoring undergraduate students through the Bachelor of Health Sciences Program at the University of Calgary.

Mona Chapellaz

Mona has joined the Precision Medicine in Nephrology team as the laboratory manager for Dr. Muruve’s lab. She completed an undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Winnipeg and a masters in Medical Sciences at the University of Calgary in the field of renal development. She has been working in medical sciences research at the University of Calgary for 14 years and co-authored 14 publications. Mona ensures the lab runs smoothly and participates in processing of patient samples.

Kevin Chapman

Kevin is the biobank facilities manager for the Precision Medicine in Nephrology since its opening in 2014. Kevin graduated with a BSc from the University of Calgary in 1990. Since then, he has worked in medical sciences research for several principal investigators. He has co-authored 26 papers in journals such as Science Translational Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation and Gastroenterology. His background and skills are a tremendous asset to the Precision Medicine program.

Joyce Maloney

Joyce has been the administrative assistant for Dr. Dan Muruve over the past 6 years.  Joyce completed LPN training in Prince Edward Island LPN School of Nursing. She has worked several years as LPN in various departments including Psychiatry, Emergency, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Labor and Delivery, Intensive Care and Continuous Care.
