Dr. Paolo Federico

Dr. Federico obtained his BSc (Hon) in Zoology, MSc and PhD in Neuroscience, MD, and Neurology specialty training at the University of Calgary. After this, he completed a clinical and research Epilepsy Fellowship at the Brain Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Federico was recruited to the University of Calgary to establish an epilepsy imaging research program.

Dr. Federico’s research activities focus on functional and structural imaging in epilepsy. His imaging studies include the study of cortical and subcortical circuits underlying the generation of interictal discharges, functional MRI analysis of the pre-ictal state, language and motor reorganization in focal epilepsy, and seizure-related structural brain changes. He also has an interest in advanced EEG analytical techniques, including the study of high frequency oscillations in humans and animal models of epilepsy.

Research Staff

Dan Pittman

Research Associate

Dan has been with the Seaman Family MR Research Centre and the Federico Lab since 2004, with a brief stint as a European Representative for Compumedics Neuroscan in 2009. He received his HBSc in Kinesiology Mind Sciences and his MSc in Neuromotor Psychology from the University of Calgary. Dan is an ongoing, essential member of the Federico research team. He can usually be found developing custom software for multi-dimensional complex datasets or instructing the students in EEG, fMRI or statistics.

Dr. Victoria Mosher

Research Associate

Victoria joined the lab in 2018 and is largely responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Federico Lab research program. Originally from Northern Ontario, she attended McMaster University and received an HBSc in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour. She then moved to Calgary and completed her PhD in Medical Imaging under the supervision of Dr Bradley Goodyear. She is interested in applying dynamic connectivity techniques to our unique intracranial EEG-fMRI dataset. In her spare time, Victoria enjoys going on adventures with her husband and two children.

Dr. Joseph Peedicail

Research Associate

Dr. Peedicail joined the lab in 2017 as a Fellow in Epilepsy and EEG under the supervision of Dr. Federico. He completed medical school at Cochin University, India followed by Internal Medicine specialty training from Manipal University and Neurology specialty training from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, India. He moved to Calgary after a brief stint as Consultant Neurologist at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute. Dr. Peedicail primarily functions as an electroencephalographer as well as providing clinical input for research studies. He is involved in intracranial EEG-fMRI and high frequency oscillations studies. In his spare time, Dr. Peedicail enjoys painting and playing keyboard piano.

Current Trainees

William Wilson

PhD student

Will joined the lab in 2017 and is currently in his fourth year of his PhD. His project aims to explore novel biomarkers of seizure generating tissue using simultaneous intracranial EEG and functional MRI. A born and bred Calgarian, Will received his BSc in honours neuroscience at the University of Calgary before pursuing graduate training with Dr. Federico. Will is also part of the Leaders in Medicine combined MD/PhD program and is interested in the intersection of medicine, research, and innovation. In his spare time, Will can be found listening to autobiographies, outside playing soccer, or inside playing a new board game.

Tahereh Rashnavadi

PhD student

Tahereh joined the lab in 2019 and is currently in her second year of her PhD. She is co-supervised by Dr. Bradley Goodyear and is exploring dynamic functional connectivity in the resting state of epileptic patients. Tahereh holds two masters degrees in the fields of Biomedical Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology from UBC and UWA (Australia), respectively. Outside research, she loves to spend her time with her family and friends.

Perry Dykens

MSc student

Perry joined the lab as a MSc student in 2019. His project is exploring the significance of the negative BOLD response to interictal discharges with a particular interest in whether this response is connected to the function of the default mode network. Originally from Nova Scotia, Perry moved to Fredericton to attend the University of New Brunswick and received a BA in Art and Social History in 2014. After working in the field, he returned to UNB and completed an HBA in Psychology with a specialization in Neuroscience in 2019. In his spare time, you can find Perry lost in a good book or perusing a used bookstore to find gems to add to his collection.
