What is a Doula and how do they fit into Mental Health Services?
Doulas have traditionally supported women during childbirth. However, doulas now work in many different areas of care such as postpartum doulas, bereavement, and death doulas. Doulas are able to provide continuity of care paired with a focus on relationship building that allows them to know an individual, their experiences, identities, and preferences for care. We believe that this model of care will be complementary to mental health services currently available. RMHDs would be able to support and enable people experiencing mental health challenges to move through encounters with different services more smoothly, with less violence, and in ways that would better uphold their rights and dignities.
Why is it Radical?
Radical doulas expand upon the support and care model of mainstream doulas in their attention to diversity and social justice. The radical doula model is inclusive and advocates for underserved and marginalized groups of people.
RMHD Values
Provide individualized care in a manner that makes the person undergoing mental health challenges feel most supported. This manifests itself in the client-doula relationship, sharing of lived experience, and continuity of care.
Continuously educate ourselves as doulas, while providing the knowledge and resources we've gained to assist in the clients journey. We strive to educate our clients on how to navigate the current mental health care system and receive the resources they are looking for
Fostering a safe environment in which individuals can freely express themselves and their intersecting identities.
As a framework that is catered towards the individual rather than the institution, RMHD aims to provide a platform for marginalized and underserved people experiencing mental health challenges to uphold their rights, needs, dignity and humanity, while amplifying their voices.
