Title: Placental Pathologies: A clinically practical guide to common and rare pathologies
Speaker: Dr. Gabrielle Bonneville
Objectives: 

  • List important placental structures and functions  
  • Understand the main pathological findings, ultrasound findings and clinical outcomes in each of the following pathological entities:  
    • Maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) 
    • Fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM) 
    • Villitis of unknown etiology (VUE) 
    • Chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI) 
    • Massive perivillous fibrin deposition (MPVFD) 
  • Review current literature on recurrence risk and potential preventative strategies

Title: Legal Information with Field Law, Part II: An update on birth injury law in Canada and demystifying the state of women's reproductive legal rights in a post Roe v. Wade world
Speakers: Justine Blanchet and J. Mark Jackson, K.C.
University of Alberta welcomes Field Law partners Mark and Justine on January 31st, 2025. For this presentation, they will provide an update on birth injury laws in Canada, and will unpack the legal impact on women's reproductive rights following the US Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade.

Title: Perioperative considerations for gender-affirming surgery in transgender men and non-binary patients
Speaker: Dr. Carmen Soltys
Objectives:

Describe the effect of exogenous testosterone on the gynecologic organs. 
Manage unwanted or abnormal uterine bleeding in transgender and non-binary patients. 
Implement an approach to the consult for gender affirming hysterectomy and oophorectomy, including discussion regarding: 

  • Management of perioperative testosterone
  • Fertility preservation
  • Long-term health consequences of bilateral oophorectomy
