University of Calgary 2-year Fellowship Program
The University of Calgary Fellowship in Advanced Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (AMIGS) has been running since 2014. It is a two-year surgical fellowship. The goal of our fellowship program is to provide training and experience in various areas that define the role of an AMIGS surgeon and clinician. The focus of this fellowship is on severe endometriosis (including multidisciplinary care), pelvic/chronic pain, fibroids, fertility surgery, and complex benign pelvic pathology. Exposure to laparoscopic, vaginal, and hysteroscopic modalities is provided with ample opportunity to work in an ambulatory care setting in addition to the operating room. With nine AMIGS staff from seven different fellowship programs (University of Calgary, University of Toronto – Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto – Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Ottawa, UBC – Fraser Health, McMaster University, and New Zealand) working at four different hospitals, our strength is in our diversity in experience and surgical approaches.
The fellow attends on average four operating room (OR) days per week with an attending staff. Fellows also have a dedicated fellow clinic, can spend time in chronic pain clinics, and have protected research and academic time. We have a yearly research presence at the CanSAGE annual national conference, and at other national and international meetings, with videos and abstracts that always draw attention and discussion.
The fellow clinic allows for independent assessment and results in comfort and efficiency with complex consultations, preoperative management and determination of plans, and postoperative assessments. This also allows fellows to gain a familiarity with pharmacological treatments and side effects. Our graduates are well trained in all aspects required to be an AMIGS consultant, and graduate with the confidence and experience needed to kick start a successful career.
Outside of clinical and academic work, Calgary is a playground for those who love the outdoors. Skiing and hiking in the Rockies can be squeezed in as time allows for work:life balance, particularly on a bluebird sky or powder day!
Our previous fellows provided much input into making our program what it is today. They have changed our practices, challenged us for the better, and have gone on to do great things in programs across the country.
