Well Resourced
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Subspecialty Residency Training Program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, affiliated with the University of Calgary, is fully accredited by the Royal College. Our well-resourced emergency department (ED) is located in a stand-alone pediatric hospital, managing over 77,000 patient visits annually. As the designated regional trauma center for children aged 0–14 years, the program provides residents with extensive pediatric trauma exposure. Residents gain experience at both the Alberta Children’s Hospital ED and the pediatric pod of the South Health Campus Hospital ED. This dual-site training offers exposure to a diverse range of presentations, from those unique to a tertiary-care children’s hospital to cases typical of a general emergency department.
Hands-On Exposure
In our ED, nearly all procedures are performed by emergency physicians and their trainees, rather than consulting services. These include fracture reductions, intubations, chest tube insertions, and minor plastic surgery procedures. Additionally, pediatric emergency physicians take on the role of Trauma Team Leader during trauma team activations. This structure provides residents with ample opportunities to perform procedures and develop their skills in trauma management and leadership.
Cutting Edge Expertise
Residents will work alongside a dynamic group of highly trained faculty, each bringing diverse educational backgrounds. Over half of our faculty have achieved Royal College credentials in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, while the remainder are trained in either pediatrics or emergency medicine. We also maintain a strong collaborative relationship with our adult emergency medicine colleagues and their training program, benefiting from their expertise and integrated learning opportunities.
