Body Interventional Fellowship

Fellowship Programs: Body Interventional Fellowship

The University of Calgary’s Department of Radiology offers a one-year comprehensive fellowship in interventional radiology. The fellowship is based at the Foothills Medical Centre, the main tertiary care referral site for southern Alberta, southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Saskatchewan. The FMC has a large, diverse clinical caseload, is attached to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and has an excellent infrastructure.

Since only one interventional radiology fellowship is offered each year, the fellow has the opportunity to tailor his/her experience over the course of the year. Several CT guided procedures and CTA’s are performed each day providing an enriched learning experience.

Fellows will also be able to participate in a wide cross-section of vascular and non-vascular procedures.

Vascular:

  • Thoracic aortic stent grafting
  • Trauma embolization
  • GI bleed embolization
  • Uterine fibroid embolization/post partum hemorrhage
  • Interventional oncology–transarterial chemoembolization (tace), atrium embolization (tare), portal vein embolization, renal cell metastasis embolization
  • Dialysis maintenance
  • Venous access
  • Venous sampling – adrenal, renal, parathyroid
  • IVC filters
  • Tips
  • Gonadal vein embolization
  • Limited peripheral vascular disease treatment

Non-vascular:

  • Interventional Oncology—percutaneous ablation (RFA, ethanol)
  • Biliary drainage
  • Cholecystostomy
  • Nephrostomy tubes and ureteric stents
  • Chest tubes
  • Tenkhoff drains
  • Feeding tubes – gastrostomy and gastrojejunostomy

We have well established, constructive relationships with our clinical services and numerous multidisciplinary rounds occur including hepatobiliary, thoracic aortic, neuroendocrine, and vascular access.
