About Us
Senior Spatial Biology Specialist: Bo Young Ahn, PhD
Bo Young Ahn, who holds an MS in Biotechnology from Korea University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, has a substantial background in the pharmaceutical industry, where she worked for twelve years in medicine development. Shifting focus back to basic research, Bo Young joined the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute at the University of Calgary as a postdoctoral researcher. Following this period, Bo Young remained at the University of Calgary, engaging in various cancer research projects and implementing advanced technologies, including spatial transcriptome analysis. In 2023, Bo Young joined the Applied Spatial Omics Centre to share expertise and knowledge in contemporary research techniques with other researchers.
Spatial Biology Technician: Kim Goring, MSc
Kim Goring holds an MSc in Immunology from the University of Calgary, where she investigated the innate immune response to bacterial infection in a murine model by demonstrating immune cell infiltration into the lungs and activation of immune markers. Building on her histology expertise, Kim operated a histology core facility within the Cumming School of Medicine, supporting researchers with tissue processing and staining services. She later contributed to cancer research at the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, focusing on histology in murine cancer models and in vitro glioblastoma research. In 2024, Kim joined the Applied Spatial Omics Centre, where she provides histology expertise and support to researchers utilizing advanced spatial techniques.
Molecular Biology Technician: Shiying Liu, MSc
Shiying Liu, MSc in Virology from Jilin University, China, has over 20 years of expertise in molecular biology, transgenics, and cell cultivation. She began her career at the University of California, San Francisco, and San Diego (1993–1997), studying gene expression, regulation, and nerve development. In 1997, she joined Dr. Rancourt’s lab at the University of Calgary, focusing on transgenic models and histological screening. Since 2014, Shiying has been a key member of the CGE facility, providing ES/iPSC cell services. At the Applied Spatial Omics Centre, she supports RNA/DNA purification and library construction for spatial transcriptomics while continuing specialized services at CGE. Her expertise drives ASOC’s mission in spatial omics research.
Lead Bioinformatician: Heewon Seo, MS, PhD
Heewon studied at Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea, where he earned an MS in Medicine and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. During his PhD, he utilized next-generation sequencing for variant- and gene-based analysis, to identify genomic variants that are associated with drug-induced side effects. Heewon continued his research as a postdoctoral fellow at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada, where he developed a translational framework for precision oncology using a compendium of preclinical pharmacogenomics datasets focused on drug combination therapies to improve current treatment strategies. Heewon is currently a Lead Bioinformatician at the Applied Spatial Omics Centre at the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine.
