CORE 435 - Social Research in Disability, Health and Rehabilitation Disablement

An overview of research methods in community rehabilitation and disability studies. An introduction to the major design, analyses and knowledge transfer strategies in the field.

Prerequisite(s):24 units including at least one of Community Rehabilitation 205 or 209 or admission to BCR or BCR-C.
Antirequisite(s):Credit for Community Rehabilitation 435 and 425 will not be allowed.

CORE 475 - Disability and Aging

Theoretical and practical issues as they relate to rehabilitation and community services for seniors with disabilities.

CORE 487 - Practicum in Rehabilitation Practice

Practical application of the basic principles of assessment, planning and intervention with individuals/groups. Supports professional development tutorials in community practicum.

CORE 510 - Critical Disability Theory

An overview of advanced disability theory. Topic will be explored through disability theory, social and political understandings of disability, power relations and the centrality of the experience of people with disabilities in the study and implementation of theory and advocacy.

Prerequisite(s):54 units and Community Rehabilitation 209, or enrolment in the BCR two-year program.

CORE 553 - Disability and the Body

Disability, impairment and the body in social, cultural and historical contexts. Topics include biomedical understandings of the body, diagnosis, rehabilitation practices and medical treatment. Course uses an intersectional approach with readings of advanced critical disability theory.

CORE 583 - Community Development in Community Rehabilitation

A study of management, practice and leadership issues for professionals working in community development and interdisciplinary teams, as well as in private, non-profit and public community-based organizations and businesses. Partnerships and community action are examined as components of rehabilitation practice.

CORE 594 - Practicum I

Senior level leadership, advocacy and reflective practice in partner agencies, associations and systems. Specifics to be negotiated with the student. Content on professional ethics will also be covered.

Prerequisite(s):54 units and admission to BCR, Minor in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, Minor in Adapted and Therapeutic Physical Activity or Concentration in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies for Health and Society Majors in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program.
Antirequisite(s):Credit for Community Rehabilitation 594 and 589.01 will not be allowed.
