What is your favorite BHSc memory?

I have so many great memories of my time in the BHSc program that it’s hard to pick just one. However, one that I often think of is walking between main campus and Foothills (something every BHSc student does). Some of my best friendships were formed walking between campuses. It was always a great way to get to know my classmates better and refresh between classes.

Looking back, what advice would you give yourself as a student?

Take advantage of all the incredible resources that the program has to offer! There are so many workshops, events, and research opportunities that are available to BHSc students. Use these to explore your interests and develop your skills. I would also tell myself or other students to reach out to all the amazing people that are affiliated with the program.

What is the best thing about your current job?

I am fortunate that there is a long list of things that I love about my job. As a Provincial Lead for Palliative and End-of-Life Care Practice Development with Alberta Health Services, I am able to work with people across the continuum of care to enhance patients’ quality of life and death across the province. Every day is different, and I have the opportunity to collaborate with incredible leaders across the Province and the Country.

How has your career evolved?

Since graduating from the BHSc program I have completed my Masters in Bioethics from Columbia University. I have continued my research exploring bioethical issues that impact vulnerable populations and have been able to teach and develop ethics curricula at Yale and Columbia. Since graduating, I have been able to use my career as a platform to make a difference in areas that I am passionate about; this has included homelessness, harm reduction, prison health, and palliative and end-of-life care.

How did your BHSc degree help you get to where you are now/current career?

The BHSc program set me up for success in my Masters and throughout my career. As a BHSc student, I learned how to communicate effectively and think critically in an interdisciplinary environment.  I also met my mentors who I still keep in touch with today. During my time in the BHSc program I learned to challenge myself and developed the confidence to go for opportunities that scare me.

What is the best piece of advice you have received during your career journey?

Don’t be afraid to ask someone to have a coffee with you or join a conversation at a conference. You never know what you’ll learn from these conversations or where they’ll lead you!
