Health and Society opens so many doors and doesn't shoe-horn you into a health focused career.

Jeffrey McLean, BHSc'19

What is your favorite BHSc memory?
My best memories are the ones with my Health and Society (HSOC) friends. I always enjoyed catching up with my classmates in the moments before class began and having HSOC get togethers!

Looking back, what advice would you give yourself as a student?
First and foremost, take care of yourself. Second, try not to stress about grades too much, they won't matter in a couple years, anyways. Third, don't forget to have fun!

What is the best thing about your current job?
I currently work as a consultant and the best thing is that I get to work on something different every day! I also love the opportunity to travel with work.

How has your career evolved?
In unpredictable ways... HSOC can really take you anywhere. For example, I work in natural resource industries with multidisciplinary teams and communities. I never thought part of my job would be supporting knowledge translation with engineers!

How did your BHSc degree help you get to where you are now/current career?
Health and Society opens so many doors and doesn't shoe-horn you into a health focused career.
Also, completing an honours thesis gave me the confidence to enroll in a thesis-based Master's program, which helped me land my current job. In particular, the research and project management skills I developed like proposal writing, time management, and perseverance, have served me well thus far!

What is the best piece of advice you have received during your career journey?
When finding your first job out of school, what matters most are the people you know. Flex your network.
