Helios and Cumming School of Medicine Research Innovation Award
Awarded to a graduating BHSc student(s) to support development of a spin-off company based on work associated with a past or current research-based course or summer studentship, developed from an iGEM project, or undertaken independent of BHSc studies. A project proposal may be co-led by more than one BHSc student, in which case an award may be shared.
$10,000
1 per year
The award is open to BHSc students (any major) in their final year of study, anticipating that their BHSc degree will be conferred in the forthcoming Spring convocation.
The student must complete and submit an application form and supporting documents, if required, by the posted deadline.
For projects that have arisen from work conducted under the supervision of a faculty member at the University of Calgary, a letter of support must be provided by the supervising faculty member. This letter must clearly describe any continued involvement of the faculty member and must indicate the faculty member's agreement that the applicant is entitled to continue work in this area independently. For projects that have emerged from an iGEM project, a letter of support from the faculty advisor should be provided.
Applications for the prize/award will be adjudicated by a panel that includes the following:
- Associate Dean (Undergraduate Health and Science Education) (or delegate)
- Representative from the Hunter Hub or Creative Destruction Lab
- 2 full-time Faculty members in the Cumming School of Medicine
- 2 BHSc alumni involved in entrepreneurship
Every effort will be made to ensure recruitment of a diverse review committee representative of the University of Calgary community.
One year after receiving the funds, the recipient shall provide the BHSc program with a written progress report and a brief summary of future plans.
The Associate Dean (Undergraduate Health and Science Education) or delegate will be responsible for managing expenditures in accordance with the approved selection process.
