Fellowship Programs: How to Apply/FAQ

Sponsored fellowships (Saudi, Oman, Qatar etc) can only apply via;  https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/pgme/future-trainees/international/fellowships/sponsored  NO OTHER APPLICATION WILL BE ACCEPTED

All non sponsored applicants must complete the University of Calgary, Radiology Fellowship Program web based application form and upload the required documents. Sponsored (Saudi, Oman, etc) applicants will be deleted.

A COMPLETE application consists of the following:

  1. Completed on-line application form
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Personal Letter, outlining interest and suitability towards a specific radiology subspecialty program.
  4. Three (3) Letters of Reference received directly from referee.  The letters should be from practicing physicians who know the applicant well.  Preferably at least one of the letters should be from the applicant's current or past residency program director (if the applicant is still in residency or within 5 – years of completion of residency). If the time lapsed has been beyond 5 years of finishing residency, at least one of the letters should be from the applicant's current division head/lead. Letters of Reference should be on official institutional/professional letterhead, signed by referee, PDF format, emailed by the REFEREE or their designate to radiology.fellowship@ucalgary.ca  Subject line: candidate name and fellowship (eg. last, first - MSK)

What happens to COMPLETE applications?

  • Once applications are COMPLETE, applicants will be notified as such in writing by email.
  • COMPLETE applications will be sent to the appropriate radiology subspecialty committee for further assessment. After this stage, the subspecialty committee's will decide upon whether or not to grant the applicant an interview.
  • Once interviews are completed and the subspecialty committee has met, applicants will be advised of decisions of offer or rejection.
  • Rejected applicants who are not offered an interview can reapply, however, the entire application must be resubmitted using the web application form as we do not store rejected applications or reference letters for candidates who are not offered interviews.
  • Rejected applicants who have completed an interview  or those who have declined an offer of a fellowship position will be able to reapply without resubmission of reference letters but are required to resubmit the web application form with updated CV and Personal Letter as long as the reapplication is made within 2 years of the original submission.  Beyond this time period, an entirely new application with resubmission of reference letters is required.
  • Successful applicants who are offered a fellowship position will be notified in writing and will be given a limited time frame to accept or decline the offer.
  • Once written confirmation of acceptance of the fellowship position is received, applications will be submitted to Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) at the University of Calgary. The PGME office will provide further instructions regarding making an application for a work permit, educational licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and applying for liability coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).

What happens to INCOMPLETE applications?

Incomplete applications will be sent a single reminder upon receipt of the web application form but will not be processed further. After offers of fellowship are made to successful applicants for a given application cycle, INCOMPLETE applications will be discarded.

Are there application deadlines?

  • The University of Calgary Radiology Fellowship program has different deadlines for Canadian Medical Graduates and International Medical Graduates because of the amount of time required to process applications with respect to work-permits and CPSA licensure and offers are made on a rolling basis for fellowship program start times of July 01 for a given year.
  • For applicants who are graduates of Canadian Medical Schools and Canadian Residency programs, applications should be received at least 10-12 months prior to July 01 of the year for which the application is being made.
  • For applicants who are graduates of International Medical Schools and International Residency programs, applications should be received at least 18-24 months prior to July 01 of the year for which the application is being made.
  • Offers of admission to the University of Calgary Radiology Fellowship Program are made on a rolling basis, hence those who apply early are at an advantage over those who apply later in the application cycle.

Is proof of English Language Proficiency required?

Candidates whose medical school education is not primarily in English must provide evidence of English language proficiency to  obtain an educational licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).  Refer to https://cpsa.ca/physicians/registration/english-language-proficiency/ for details.

Can one apply to multiple fellowship programs?

Yes, applications to two (2) fellowship programs can be made. While applicants can use the same reference letters and CV, a separate cover letter outlining the candidate’s suitability and interest towards a particular subspecialty radiology fellowship program is required for each radiology subspecialty for which an application is being made.
