Emergency Radiology Fellowship

Fellowship Programs: Emergency Radiology Fellowship

The University of Calgary’s Department of Radiology offers a one-year fellowship in Emergency and Trauma radiology. The academic year begins July 1st, although under certain circumstances, exceptions may be considered.

The fellowship is based at the Foothills Medical Centre, the major tertiary referral center for southern Alberta, as well as southeastern British Columbia and southwestern Saskatchewan. It is the designated Level 1 Trauma Centre for the Calgary Health Region and base for the renown Calgary Stroke Program.

The program focuses on diagnostic imaging in the setting of emergent medical conditions, including trauma (including polytrauma and musculoskeletal trauma), acute stroke, vascular conditions, and surgical emergencies. It aims to develop skills in imaging recommendations, protocolling and interpretation of studies in the ER setting, as well the ability to manage workflow. The focus of the training will be on CT, ultrasound, and radiographs. The radiology team works in close collaboration with the emergency department, trauma team, and acute stroke service.

The majority of clinical time is spent in Emergency Radiology, with dedicated rotations in other subspecialties as pertains to this discipline.

Clinical responsibilities include: exam protocols and interpretation, procedures as pertain to the emergency setting, collaboration/consultation with the clinicians as required.

Academic activities include: conducting Fellow Rounds for residents, attending relevant multidisciplinary rounds, journal club, and grand rounds.
