Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship

Fellowship Programs: Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship

The Musculoskeletal Radiology fellowship at the University of Calgary is a one year fellowship which provides comprehensive training in imaging of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including sports injuries, trauma, orthopedic oncology, and arthritis.

The fellowship is centered out of the Foothills Medical Centre, the main tertiary care referral site for southern Alberta, which has a large diverse clinical caseload and is attached to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. As only one fellowship position is offered each year, the fellow has excellent access to case volume and teaching.

Training encompasses all aspects of MSK imaging: Radiography, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and interventional procedures. The procedural component of the fellowship primarily includes arthrography, joint aspiration and biopsy but there are also the opportunities to become involved in procedures such as nerve blocks, osteoid osteoma ablation and kyphoplasty. Fellows are also encouraged to become involved in our busy MSK ultrasound practice which performs a significant volume of diagnostic MSK US studies each day, as well as US-guided procedures including tenotomies, PRP injections, lavage of calcific tendinosis, nerve blocks, flexor retinaculum release for carpal tunnel, trigger finger injections etc.

Academic responsibilities include assisting with regular resident view box teaching, presenting at multidisciplinary Sarcoma and Rheumatology rounds, conducting case rounds for residents and participating in Journal club. There are also opportunities to participate in Sports Medicine rounds and Conservative hip rounds. Participation in clinical research is strongly encouraged.

Our musculoskeletal fellowship offers an excellent educational and clinical experience, due to the volume, variety and breadth of pathology seen every day. The scope of subspecialty interests, within the department and across the institution, provide a breadth of educational experiences and cross-specialty interactions and opportunities.
