Admission to the Residency Program - Application Procedures
At the Post Graduate Year 1 level (PGY-1, R1, first residency year) pathways for entry into the Program are as follows:
1. Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) Main Residency Match (R1 / PGY-1). Most of the entrants to the program are selected through the CaRMS R1 match. Our program will offer 30 positions to Canadian Medical Grads (CMGs) in 2021. Please visit the CaRMS website for eligibility and application procedures. Please visit the CaRMS website under Quick Links for eligibility and application procedures.
2. Alberta International Medical Graduate Program (AIMG). Our residency program has been an active participant in the AIMG Program and will accept 5 AIMG trainees in 2021. We do not accept residents, students or practicing physicians from outside of Canada unless they are eligible for CaRMS and have been enrolled in the AIMG program. We do not accept VISA sponsored trainees. Please visit the AIMG website under Quick Links for eligibility and application procedures.
3. Re-entry Positions for 2021 will not be offered.
4. Transfers to the Program at the PGY1 or 2 level will be considered if our program is able to accommodate additional trainees. Trainees interested in considering transfer must review the Resident Transfer Policy posted on the PGME website. Details could be found at https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/pgme/future-trainees/cmsg/residency/application-procedures. All applicants must contact the PGME office to discuss this possibility prior to contacting our program as the PGME office is aware of our capacity.
5. Internationally Funded Graduates: The Internal Medicine Residency Program does not offer training to residents who are funded by agencies or governments outside of Canada.
Certification
Our program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) which is responsible for certification of specialists in Canada. The RCPSC determines the pathway(s) and minimum duration of training in internal medicine and its subspecialties. For all subspecialties of Internal Medicine, residents will complete three years of internal medicine training that is sometimes referred to as 'Core Internal Medicine'. During the PGY-3 year, these residents will enter the PGY-4 CaRMS Medical Subspecialty Match (MSM) for entry into Subspecialty Programs. However, some disciplines that relate closely to internal medicine (e.g. neurology, dermatology) are direct entry programs at the PGY-1 CaRMS match. This can change and applicants are responsible for understanding and adhering to application processes. If in doubt, be sure to consult CaRMS regarding eligibility.
