Admission to the Residency Program - Application Procedures

At the Post Graduate Year 1 level (PGY-1, R1, first residency year) pathways for entry into the Program are as follows:

1.  Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS) Main Residency Match (R1 / PGY-1) 

Approximately 90% of entrants to the program are selected through the CaRMS R1 match.  Our program typically offers ~30 positions per year.   Please visit the CaRMS website for eligibility and application procedures.   http://carms.ca

2.  Alberta International Medical Graduate Program (AIMG).

The Program has been an active participant in the AIMG Program and admits 5 - 6 applicants each year.   We anticipate offering up to 6 positions for entry July 1, 2024.   Please visit the AIMG website for eligibility and application procedures.  http://aimg.ca

3.  Re-entry Positions will be considered by the Program

 These are intended for physicians currently practicing in Alberta who wish to pursue additional training.   Visit the Post Graduate Medical Education Canadian Applicants webpage for more information.

4.  Transfers to the Program at any PGY Level - see Transfers

The Internal Medicine Residency Program does not offer training to residents that are funded by agencies or governments outside of Canada.   

Certification

Our program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) which is responsible for certification of specialists in Canada.  The RCPSC determines the pathway(s) and minimum duration of training in internal medicine and its subspecialties.  For General Internal Medicine and most Subspecialties of Internal Medicine, residents will complete three years of internal medicine training that is sometimes referred to as 'Core Internal Medicine'.   During the PGY-3 year, these residents will enter the PGY-4 CaRMS match for entry into General Internal Medicine or Subspecialty Programs.  However, some disciplines that relate closely to internal medicine (e.g. neurology, dermatology) are direct entry programs at the PGY-1 CaRMS match.  This can change and applicants are responsible for understanding and adhering to application processes.  If in doubt, be sure to consult an authority.
