Introduction to MRI Physics

October 14 – December 9 | Biweekly on Wednesdays from 10 am to 12 pm | Online via Zoom

Join postdoctoral fellow Dr. Bryce Geeraert in this five part series to learn about the fundamental and physical mechanisms of an MRI scanner. This interactive workshop will provide participants with an intuitive, yet accurate, understanding of how an MRI scanner works. Participants will learn about the fundamental physics behind MRI, explore how common image types are acquired, and discuss common issues with MRI images. The focus will be on providing simple, clear descriptions of complicated physical interactions, and will provide attendees with a strong understanding of MRI scanners and images, along with common pitfalls and how to account for them. See Introduction to MRI Physics for more information and to register, and contact realise@ucalgary.ca with any questions.

MR Training

Level 0: Safety Training & Refresher

Target Group: All research personnel who will observe or assist with scans at the 3T. Level 0 is required to gain access to the card access-controlled MR area, but is NOT sufficient for entry to the MR room.

Training Process

Level 1: MR Access Orientation

Target Group: All research personnel who are booking participants for studies on the 3T or assisting in the MR room. These individuals must have completed Level 0 training. Any study personnel enrolling, pre-screening, consenting or entering the scanning room must complete Level 1 safety training.

Training Process

NOTE: After 1 year of non-participation in the MR environment, the training process should be repeated.

Level 2: MR Operation

Target Group: Level 2 training is intended for individuals directly operating the GE 3T scanner for research without supervision and requiring 'expert' privileges. These individuals must have completed Level 1 training.

Training Process

  • Contact the CAIR Research Associate to express your interest in this training.
  • Complete application form
  • Monitor emails for information regarding onsite sessions

Mock Scanner Training

Target group: All research personnel who want to bring participants for a mock (MRI simulation) scanner session.

The training consists of a review of the mock scanner equipment and software. Once the training is completed, you will be given access to the booking calendar (Calpendo) that is described in the Calpendo guide. Please contact the CAIR Research Associate to express your interest in this training.
