Contrast RISK Project

Reducing Injury Sustained by Kidneys

Contrast-associated acute kidney injury is a serious and expensive complication that can happen after a heart procedure like an angiogram or angioplasty. People who develop acute kidney injury end up staying in the hospital longer, might need dialysis, and end up costing the health care system more.

To help reduce the chances of people getting an acute kidney injury, researchers at the Universities of Calgary and Alberta have implemented a computer software program that helps health care providers find high-risk patients and perform their procedures more safely by choosing the right amount of dye and intravenous fluid right at the patient’s bedside.

This software program is being used in all 3 cardiac catheterization facilities in Alberta.
