Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, with a metropolitan population of >1.3 million people (Statistics Canada 2021 Census) and is located approximately 60-90 minutes driving east of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It is one of the sunniest cities in Canada and our winters are broken up by warm, dry chinook winds that routinely blow into the city from over the mountains.
Calgary was recently named as the world’s 3rd most liveable city, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) 2022 Global Liveability Index. Calgary tied with Zurich and Switzerland for third place, behind Vienna in first place and Copenhagen in second place. Calgary has been in the top 10 before, but third spot is the highest ranking the city has reached, beating out Vancouver in fifth place and Toronto in eighth place.
Calgary has a vibrant theatre, art, food, sport, and music community and offers world class education from elementary to university and post-graduate training. Our city was designated one of the cultural capitals of Canada in 2012.
Outdoor sport and nature enthusiasts can find themselves in breathtaking mountain scenery less than an hour drive from the city. But there is no need to head out of the city in search of outdoor fun. The Rotary/Mattamy Greenway is a perimeter recreational pathway that encircles most of the city of Calgary and interconnects its many existing pathway spokes that originate or pass through its districts and neighborhoods. Together, they form one of the largest pathway networks in the world with over 1000km of trails waiting to be explored. As a year-round destination for cyclists, cross-country skiers, runners, walkers, nature lovers, and kids of all ages, it is a free recreational attraction of connected urban pathways for everyone to enjoy. The challenging 145km perimeter route is primarily used for road biking and can take over 8 hours to complete.
