The Neuroradiology Fellow and supervising Neuroradiologist function closely as a team to provide subspecialty coverage and patient care at our centres.

There are three (3) types of Duty Hours in our Neuroradiology Fellowship Program:

  •  Standard Duty Hours refers to scheduled work performed Monday through Friday during daytime hours (08:00-17:00 hours). Most of our program’s rotations are scheduled as Standard Duty Hours.
  • Shift-Based Duty Hours are an alternative scheduling practice involving blocks of scheduled time to address care needs not covered by standard duty hours or on-call duty hours. Our Shift-Based Duty Hours include weekday evening (16:30-23:00 hours), weekend day (08:00-16:00 hours), and weekend evening mini-shifts (18:00-22:00 hours) and are performed alongside Neuroradiology Faculty (who continue to work in house until 23:00 hours). Fellows are mostly focused upon providing Neuro MRI services at FMC during this shifts. The Neuro CT services at our Centre are primarily managed by in-house (24/7/365) Diagnostic Radiology Residents. Our Fellows triage cases, protocol MR exams, provide support and guidance to our MR technologists, and report Emergency Department and Inpatient MR scans. When the ER/IP MR worklists are cleared, Fellows assist the Diagnostic Radiology Residents to manage ER/IP Neuro CT worklists and may report outpatient Neuro CT/MR scans if time permits, as well.
  • On-Call Duty Hours refer to those times the Fellow carries clinical responsibilities beyond the Standard and Shift-Based Duty Hours. In our program, On-Call Duty Hours are performed as home call (i.e., pager call) which refers to immediate availability for clinical service. On-Call Duty Hours in our program are weeknight (Mon-Fri) and weekend (Sat, Sun, Stat) overnight 22:30-07:30 hours. Fellows are provided a portable call laptop that has VPN and PACS capabilities to view cases from home.

Fellow On-Call rotations are shared equitably within the Fellow cohort as part of their clinical service provision and is currently 1:6 weeks.

All patient cases reported by our Neuroradiology Fellows are reviewed and approved by their supervising Neuroradiologist before the Fellow completes their shift.

The Neuroradiology Fellowship program follows the on-call service recommendations of the Post-Graduate Medical Education office at the University of Calgary.
