Cultivate Inclusion

Overview

Members within our Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) community have come to leadership to share their stories and daily experiences of racism and harm. Their courage in bringing these incidents forward is appreciated and is resulting in a variety of actions.

Whether you are a learner, faculty, staff or trainee, we all deserve safety. If you witness or experience microaggressions, discrimination or harassment, there are several routes of reporting an incident confidentially. Supports and resources are available at CSM.

Dean's Message

I care deeply about cultivating a respectful, collaborative environment. As dean, a significant priority for me is to focus on advancing our anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) efforts and our commitments to ii'taa'poh'to'p, the University of Calgary’s Indigenous strategy. The Cumming School of Medicine’s (CSM) leadership team acknowledges that as a school there is a need to create positive change in our culture… Part of that change is also cultivating a respectful, safe campus, fostering more open communication and explicit action around issues of belonging, harassment, racism and discrimination, safe reporting and accountability, and celebrating our growing diversity.

Dean, Cumming School of Medicine, February 8, 2023

Cultivate Inclusion: Microaffirmations

What is a microaffirmation?

Microaffirmations are small action that you can take to help build inclusive, caring and validating environments. They are the counterpart to microaggressions.

What is a microaggression?

Microaggressions are negative everyday actions or words rooted in bias or discrimination, directed towards people with marginalized identities.

Why are microaggressions harmful?

They may be unintentional or indirect, but their impact is far from 'micro' because of how common they are. They can leave people feeling othered and disrespected.
