Registration
Physicians must complete residency training (postgraduate medical education) after their MD degree before they can practice medicine. The administrative processes for residents are complex and therefore registration is initiated through the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). Residents are both students at the University, and employees of the Calgary Health Region and must be registered with the University, Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the provincial Medical Licensing Authority (The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)). There are also requirements from the national educational organizations (The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)), that affect the resident, the residency training program, and the PGME office.
Residents are students of the University of Calgary and must register and pay fees through the Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and Tuition Fees through the University of Calgary. Registration with the PGME office must done on an annual basis to ensure your status and information are correct and up to date.
To help the registration process run smoothly, the PGME office has developed registration check lists and guides for new and returning trainees.
